“L” (artist's collection)

found object assemblage; 29x14”; This collage began with a piece of an oil painting that Alden threw away and I dug out of the trash. I liked the colors and the evocative shapes in the paint, so I laid it on a corner of my worktable and, over the next year, casually collected things on top of it that seemed like they belonged there. At some point, I came across a little gold hatpin with a flying bird holding a pendant with the letter “L”, and the whole piece came together at once. There is a sentence written into the painting:

“The summer it rained nearly every day

a crow flew at the window over my kitchen sink

and I saw through the cracks

a scarecrow in the cucumber field

and I heard a voice say, 'Come'.”
