Flight 2 (artist's collection)
found object assemblage with patchwork; 21x10”; The Flight series came about because I needed to do something with my hands while I was sitting through a few long meetings. So I started “sketching” with patchwork. Simultaneously, I came across a stash of antique photographs that I'd forgotten about and the two things started living together in my head. This was during the years following 911 and I was thinking about refugees and the many things we flee, not just physical situations like war and famine, but also things like hard relationships and things about ourselves that we don't want to address. Staging somber tableaus of people in flight, then containing them in curved wooden ribs with bright patchwork skies, felt like a way to think hopefully into a difficult subject. Flight 2 suggests a family packed and ready to leave what's familiar behind.
